Cougars Take Giant Step To GSAC Title

AZUSA, Calif. -- Everybody knows that in order to win a championship, you must beat the defending champion. Azusa Pacific knocked off 4-time defending GSAC champion Biola, 7-3, Tuesday afternoon in Azusa, moving one step closer towards its eight GSAC championship and first since 1996.

The win is the Cougars' third over the Eagles this year, and it widens the gap between the Cougars and the Eagles, who currently sit in third behind Point Loma. With 8 games remaining for the Cougars and 5 for Biola, the Cougars lead the Eagles by 6 games in the loss column.  Point Loma trails by 3 ¸ games, and they have 7 remaining, including 2 with the Cougars.

Azusa Pacific never trailed in the game and took a 2-0 lead with a Rocky Binkowski 2-out, 2-RBI single in the Cougars' first at-bat.  They added 2 more in the fourth with Binkowski scored on a wild pitch, followed by Mike Soto scoring on an Eagle error the next batter.

Biola did its best to get back into the contest, scoring a pair in the sixth on a 2-RBI double by Eric Slater, and then another in the seventh on an RBI double by Mark Wade.

Momentum appeared to be shifting at that point, especially when the Eagles nearly escaped a bases loaded no-out situation.  Biola reliever Justin Wayland notched back-to-back strikeouts, then ran 2 strikes on the Cougarsâ Collin Kyte.  However, a passed ball scored Alex Valadez from the third, then Kyte made the Eagles pay with a 2-RBI single to center field scoring Eric Ordorica and Binkowski.

Kyte ended the day with 3 RBIs. Binkowski had 3 of the Cougars' 7 hits, going 3-for-3 on the day with 2 runs and 2 RBIs.  George Barnes worked 5.2 innings, allowing just 2 earned runs to move to 6-0 on the season. Four Cougar relievers worked the final 3.1 innings, and B.J. Litchfield worked the final 2.1, allowing just a lone single, to pick up his ninth save of the year.

With the win, the Cougars are now 23-11 overall, 16-4 in the GSAC Biola falls to 21-18-1 overall, 13-10 GSAC.
