Cougars Get Early GSAC Sweep

AZUSA, Calif. – Last season, California Baptist had Azusa Pacific's number, winning 4-of-6 meetings.  This afternoon the tables turned as the Cougars swept a key early season GSAC doubleheader from the Lancers, 9-8 and 5-0.

The sweep runs the Cougars' winning streak to 3, their longest such streak of the season, and it also marks the first time since opening day that Cougars are above the .500 mark.

With the opening game tied at 3-3 in the third inning, senior Collin Kyte belted his first home run of the season, a grand slam, over the left center field fence to give the Cougars a 7-3 lead they would never lose.  Later in the inning, Victor Ambruso hit an RBI double to give the Cougars an 8-3 lead.

The Lancers hit a pair of home runs to key a 3-run eighth, then put an unearned run across in the ninth.  However, Cougar closer B. J. Litchfield slammed the door for his fourth save of the season.  Senior George Barnes worked 1.2 innings of scoreless relief to pick up his second win.

Kyte ended the game with 5 RBIs.  Senior Mike Soto and junior Seth Johnson (pictured) both went 2-for-3 with 2 runs.  Senior Eric Ordorica and sophomore Robbie Lindsey also finished 2-for-3 with an RBI apiece.

In the nightcap, senior Nick Padilla (pictured) silenced one of the GSAC's top offensive units, allowing just 3 hits and 3 walks, while striking out a career-high 6 to pick up his first win of the season.

The Cougars manufactured a pair of runs in the third with back-to-back RBI singles from Shaun Beutner and Ordorica, and then added another run in the fourth when junior Rocky Binkowski drove in Kyte, who earlier doubled, with an RBI single.

Sophomore Matt Wiewel hit a 2-run home run, the first of his career over the right-center field fence in the fifth to round out the scoring.  Litchfield came on in relief of Padilla and pitched a scoreless seventh.

Kyte capped off his day 2-for-2 with a run and a stolen base.  Beutner finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI, and Binkowski was 2-for-3 with an RBI.

With the sweep, the Cougars improve to 7-6, 3-1, while Cal Baptist drops to 8-8-1, 2-3
