Cougars Take Round One From Biola

LA MIRADA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific head coach Tony Barbone knows that if the Cougars are to have any shot at returning to the GSAC podium for the first time in 4 years, then they will have to dethrone 4-time defending champion Biola.
 
The Cougars took their first huge step in the process defeating the Eagles, 15-7, in La Mirada in the first meeting of the season between the 2 squads.
 
A 4-run first inning outburst off Biola's All-GSAC pitcher Chad Ekin put the Cougars ahead, forcing the Eagles to play catch-up the rest of the day.  The Cougars led the entire way.  Senior Victor Ambruso led the game off with a double, then scored on junior Seth Johnson's RBI double 2 batters later, and the Cougars were off and running.
 
Biola closed the gap to 5-4 in the bottom of the fourth, but the Cougars answered  with a pair of runs in the fifth and sixth and 3 runs in the seventh and ninth.
 
Seniors Mike Soto, Eric Ordorica and Collin Kyte all hit home runs.  Soto's and Ordorica's were solo shots, while Kyte's was a pinch-hit 2-run shot in the seventh.
 
Sophomore Kelly Strickland, still making his return from a 2-year layoff after arm surgery, started on the hill and went 2.1 innings, allowing 3 runs.  Senior Matt Canada worked the next 2.2 innings, giving up 1 run to pick up the win.
 
Johnson finished the day 3-for-5 with an RBI and a pair of runs scored.  Ordorica and Soto both finished 2-for-4.  Kyte finished 2-for-2 with 3 RBIs and 2 runs scored.
 
With the win, the Cougars improve to 5-6, 1-1, while Biola drops to 5-7, 2-2.
