Cougars' 26 Is More Than Enough

AZUSA, CALIF. – The NAIA's No. 9-ranked Azusa Pacific pushed its winning streak to 6 straight by taking its third straight doubleheader, downing Bethany College, 18-2 and 8-0. The combined 26 runs is the highest single-day scoring total at home in program history.

In the opener, the Cougars sent 19 batters to the plate in the bottom of the second inning and when the dust finally settled, Azusa Pacific had tallied 14 runs on 12 hits and 3 Bruin errors to take a commanding 16-0 lead after just 2 innings of play. Lorna Lyttle hit her second RBI triple of the game to give Azusa Pacific an 8-0 lead during the outburst.

Eleven different Cougars recorded a hit in the game and 2 more reached base on a walk. Sophomores Sasha Budde and Aurion Sanchez each drove in 3 runs to lead Azusa Pacific's 16-hit attack.

In the nightcap, senior pitcher Mandy Dorow allowed only 1 hit in 5 innings of work, striking out 4 along the way to collect her 10th shutout of the season. The Cougars scored 3 runs in both the first and third innings, with Lyttle again leading the way. The junior centerfielder hit RBI singles that sparked 3-run rallies in both innings. Freshman Trisha Rico drew a walk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the fifth inning to bring the doubleheader to a close with an 8-0 victory.

Lyttle was a perfect 4-for-4 on the day with 4 runs and 4 RBIs, and senior left fielder Jackie Lenett came off the bench in both games to collect her first, second and third collegiate hits. Lenett was 3-for-3 with a walk and 2 runs for the day. Budde tallied a team-high 5 RBIs in the doubleheader.

With the sweep Azusa Pacific improves to 32-13.
