Cougars Impress in Complex Debut

AZUSA, CALIF. -- Azusa Pacificâs new softball facility drew plenty of oohs and ahhs in its debut, but the NAIAâs No. 2-ranked Cougar softball team provided an afternoon of entertainment in an impressive 6-1, 7-0 sweep over College of Notre Dame Saturday afternoon.
 
The Cougars, who have played all but 2 of their 11 games so far without the services of All- American pitcher Mandy Dorow, relied on the arm of freshman Rachel Potucek for both games. Potucek allowed 1 run on 6 hits over the 2 games and retired the last 15 batters she faced in the second game.
 
In the first game, Sasha Budde scored the first run at the new field on Cassie Lakeyâs RBI single that broke a scoreless tie to give the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth. The
Argonauts answered with a single run in the fifth, but Jennie Waleszoniaâs RBI triple in the bottom of the fifth gave Azusa Pacific the lead for good. Lorna Lyttle, Azusa Pacificâs single-
season and career home run record holder, hit her second home run of the season, a solo shot in the bottom of the sixth that gave the Cougars a 6-1 lead. Potucek surrendered 3 hits and struck out 3 en route to the victory.
 
In the nightcap, Budde scored 3 runs on 3-for-4 batting, leading the Cougars to a 7-0 victory. Lyttle added an RBI double to cap the scoring in the bottom of the sixth inning. Notre Dame centerfielder Karla Cruz led off the top of the third inning with a single, but Potucek set down 15 consecutive Argonaut batters to end the game. Kelli Thiederman went 2-for-3 with 2 RBI and a stolen base.
 
With the wins, the Cougars improve to 7-4 on the season, while Notre Dame drops to 2-9.
