AZUSA, CALIF. – In one of its most complete performances of the season, the NAIA's No. 11-ranked Azusa Pacific Cougars made quick work of California Baptist, 30-17, 30-18, 30-19, to record its fifth straight win.
As a team, the Cougars were efficient all night, hit an impressive 32.1%, committing just 13 attack errors, 4 service errors and 2 serve receiving errors.
"We played a really good match tonight," Gregory said. "Cal Baptist gave us a really tough matches in the past, and this was a a great win for us."
Freshman
Maria Abaca played her best match of the season, registering a match-high 16 kills and hitting 51.7%.
"I felt really confident tonight," said Abaca. "My teammates had confidence in me, and that helped me perform well."
She also had 10 digs, 3 aces and 2 blocks.
"Her timing and technique were better than usual tonight," head coach Gerry Gregory said. "She hit the ball like a rocket and was able to use her natural athletic ability. Everything came together for her tonight."
Sophomore All-American
Jenna Sagehorn added 11 kills, just one attack error, and 10 digs. Junior
T.J. Gause had a match-high 11 digs to bring her career total to 1,066 and moving her to within 21 digs of second place on Azusa Pacific's all-time chart.
With the win, the Cougars improve to 21-6 overall, 12-5 GSAC. Cal Baptist drops to 6-15, 5-12 GSAC.
