Cougars Clinch Second Straight GSAC Crown

SANTA CLARITA, CALIF. – Freshman Erin Arbizu and senior All-American Chrissy Sanford scored 2 goals apiece as Azusa Pacific clinched at least a tie for its second consecutive GSAC title with a 5-0 win over The Master's College.

The Cougars become the first team to repeat as conference champions since Westmont won 5 straight titles from 1993-97.

The win is the Cougars' 12th straight victory and a school record eighth consecutive shutout.

Arbizu put the Cougars on the board in the 23rd minute, and that opened the door for a 4-goal outburst as the Cougars carried a 4-0 lead into the locker room.

Sanford put the Cougars up 2-0 in the 36th minute, and just 4 minutes later junior Rachel Evans scored her second goal of the season on a penalty kick. Arbizu closed out the scoring with her second goal just 2 minutes before the end of the half.

Sanford rounded out the scoring just 6 minutes into the second half with her 14th goal of the season. Sophomore GK Melissa Strother collected 4 saves to complete the school-record shutout.

Through 8 GSAC games, the Cougars have outscored their opponents, 36-1. With just one GSAC games remaining, the Cougars can clinch their second consecutive conference title outright with a win over Christian Heritage Saturday afternoon.

With the win, the Cougars improve to 12-1 overall, 9-0 in the GSAC. The Master's drops to 9-5-1, 4-4-1 GSAC.
