Cougars Stroll Past Biola

LA MIRADA, CALIF. -- The NAIA's No. 6-ranked Azusa Pacific scored 3 goals in the first 15 minutes, then shored up its defense the rest of the way to post a 3-0 shutout victory over Biola Tuesday afternoon in La Mirada.

Senior All-American Matt Evans (Pasadena, Calif./Maranatha HS) was up to his usual antics again as he scored the opening goal just 5 minutes into the match and assisted on the Cougars' other 2 tallies.

The goal was Evans' sixth of the season, and the pair of assists give him 8 on the year for a season total of 20 points. He now has 111 career points (37 goals, 37 assists), which places him in second place on the Cougarsâ all-time scoring chart. Evans trails current record holder Jason Roufs (125) by just 14 points.

Junior Jacob Ward (El Cajon, Calif./Valhalla HS) and Stephen Hawk (Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) each tallied their second goals of the season. Ward in the tenth minute, Hawk just 5 minutes later.

Senior GK Scott Strahammer (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator HS) collected 4 saves to post his second consecutive shutout, which is also his fourth of the season. Strahammer needs just 3 shutouts to become Azusa Pacific's all-time leader in career shutouts.

The Cougars out-shot the Eagles, 15-5, and picked up their second straight win over the Eagles and their eighth in the past 11 meetings since 1994.

With the win, Azusa Pacific moves to 7-0-2 overall, 3-0 GSAC. Biola drops to 1-8 overall, 0-3 GSAC. The Cougars host No. 23 Westmont College Friday night at 5 p.m.
