AZUSA, CALIF. -- Kim Akman knocked in a loose ball in the midst of a wild scramble in front of the net to give Cal Poly Pomona a 1-0 season-opening victory over the NAIA's No. 4-ranked Azusa Pacific Friday night.
The Broncos, who return every player from last year's team that advanced to the NCAA Division II national championship game, controlled the contest from beginning to end, rifling Cougar keeper Regina Teplansky (Ontario, Calif./Chino HS) with 16 shots in her first-ever collegiate game. Teplansky did her best to keep the Cougars in the game, making several excellent saves on point-blank shots.
Cal Poly is 1-0 on the season while Azusa Pacific, which suffers its first shutout defeat since 1997, falls to 0-1.
