Cougars Take Season-Opener

AZUSA, CALIF. -- The NAIA's No. 11-ranked Azusa Pacific scored goals in each half to down neighborhood rival Cal Poly Pomona, 2-0, Friday night in both teams' 2000 season opener.

Matt Hall's San Clemente, Calif./San Clemente HS) header capped a series of wild plays in front of the Bronco net to put Azusa Pacific up 1-0 in the 37th minute. The was all the Cougars needed to collect their sixth straight home-opening victory and their 10th season-opening victory in the past 11 years.

In the second half, newcomer J.D. Rotteau (Saugus, Calif./Moorpark CC) broke loose of a Bronco defender to track down Jordan Jone's Clovis, Calif./Clovis HS) long lead pass and tap the ball pass Bronco keeper Brian Dorman to put Azusa Pacific up 2-0 in the 56th minute.

The shutout was junior keeper Scott Strahammer's (Arlington Heights, Ill./St. Viator HS) fifth of his career and his first ever over an NCAA Division II school.
Cal Poly was forced to play a man down for the final 53 minutes of the game after defender Jeff Quick was whistled for his second-yellow card in less the a minute for back-to-back hard tackles from behind. Hall scored the game's first goal less than 10 seconds after Quick's ejection.
Azusa Pacific is 1-0 on the season while Cal Poly falls to 0-1.
