AZUSA, CALIF. – This one was a little too easy.
The NAIA's No. 8-ranked Azusa Pacific scored 24 of the game's first 31 points and cruised on in for a 116-38 victory over San Jose Christian College.
All 12 Cougars scored, with 6 tallying double-digit efforts. Freshman
Brett Michel paced the way with a career-high 19 points off the bench, burying 5 straight treys to lead a perimeter onslaught that produced 14 3-point field for the Cougars. Junior center
Gary Dredge recorded 15 points and a career-high 12 rebounds while junior guard
Steve McIlwain added 14 points, thanks in part to 4-for-8 shooting from the 3-point stripe.
The 78-point victory is the second largest in school history. Two years ago Azusa Pacific crushed Bethany College, 120-37, in Azusa. The Cougars, who have now won 8 straight, have also won all 8 games by 20 or more points.
In tonight's blowout, the Cougars led 59-18 at the half. In fact, by the 6:47 mark of the first half, they in effect scored their game-winning 39
th point on a Michel lay-up.
Azusa Pacific was as crisp and efficient as its has been all season. The Cougars made 59% (46-of-78) of their shot and committed a season-low 8 turnovers. They held the Warriors to just 24% (13-for-55) shooting and forced them into 25 turnovers.
Every Cougar played 10 minutes with only
John Bourne, who finished with 13 points and 9 rebounds, registering more than 24 minutes of playing time.
Sophomore guard
Caleb Gervin, who recorded 8 points and 6 assists in 10 minutes of first-half action, sat out the second half after cutting his left hand on a glass at halftime. He is expected back for next week's game vs. Lewis-Clark State.
