ATHERTON, CALIF. – All 12 Cougars scored and 6 of them tallied double digits as the NAIA's No. 8-ranked Azusa Pacific cruised to a 106-56 victory over Bethany College on the final day of the Bud Presley Classic at Menlo College.
Azusa Pacific's 3 premier guards of
Caleb Gervin,
Jeff Staniland and
Steve McIlwain combined for 50 points as the Cougars crushed Bethany for the 10
th straight time.
Gervin led the way with a game-high 18 points, 14 of which came in just 7 minutes of work in the second half. Staniland tossed in 17, including 12 in the first half when he staked the Cougars to a 47-24 lead. Meanwhile, McIlwain, who was making his second consecutive start, buried 15 points on the strength of 3-for-5 shooting from the 3-point arc.
In fact, it was the Cougars' long distance shooting that put the game out of reach. Azusa Pacific connected on 4 quick bombs to open the second half, the last coming off the fingertips of
Anthony Haggins, whose trey pushed the Cougar lead to 63-29 with 15:37 left in the game.
Haggins put together his best game as a Cougar, dropping in 17 points on 5-for-6 shooting, including a 3-for-4 clip from the 3-point arc.
"It was good to have everyone play and contribute," said Cougar coach
Bill Odell, "plus guys like Steve (McIlwain) and Anthony (Haggins) got to break out and have a good game and lead the way."
Azusa Pacific opened the game with a 14-3 run in less than 5 minutes into the game with Staniland and
John Bourne inflicting most of the damage, combining for 11 points. The Bruins never got closer than 9 points the rest of the way and trailed by as many as 26 before the first half ended.
After the Cougars' early tear in the second half, the benches emptied.
Azusa Pacific improves to 4-1 on the season, with all 4 margin of victories greater than 25 points.
