AZUSA, CALIF. – Azusa Pacific made 9 of its first 13 shots of the second half, including a trio of 3-pointers, to turn a 9-point halftime lead into a 25-point cushion as the Cougars cruised in for an 81-
47 nonconference victory over Occidental.
Sophomore guard
Jeff Staniland led the charge with a season-high 20 points on a sizzling 8-for-9 clip from the floor. His trey from the top of the key capped the second-half surge and gave the Cougars a 55-30 advantage with 11:42 left in the game.
All 12 Cougars played as Azusa Pacific pushed its lead to as many as 38 (77-39 with 3:11 remaining) before settling on a 34-point win.
Sophomore guard
Caleb Gervin chipped in 14 points and junior forward
John Bourne added 11 points and a game-high 9 rebounds.
Not lost in Azusa Pacific's offensive explosion is another fine defensive effort. For the third straight game, the Cougars forced their foe into more than 20 turnovers, this time taking advantage of 23 Tiger miscues. Additionally, they held Oxy to just 33% (17-for-51) shooting, including a paltry .259 (7-for-27) clip in the second half while the were tickling the twine at a .577 (15-for-26) pace.
