Cougars Keep GSAC Lead, Beat CBU

RIVERSIDE, CALIF. -- It was the kind of game that in the course of a championship season championship teams win. So perhaps Azusa Pacific's 1-0 GSAC victory at Cal Baptist Saturday is a good sign of things to come next week.

The Cougars were less than sharp and met up with a goalie who was at the top of his game. Still, Azusa Pacific managed to maintain its 1-game GSAC lead when junior Dan Wilson scored his eighth goal of the season, rebounding a free kick past Robby Turner in the 27th minute of the game. It was the only slip Turner allowed all day, collecting a hefty 14 saves in 90 minutes of work, but it enough of a slip to give the Cougars their ninth win in the past 10 meetings with the Lancers.

The majority of the game was played in the midfield though over the final 20 minutes Azusa Pacific did mount several good scoring threats, but Turner turned the Cougars away each time.

His counterpart, Azusa Pacific keeper Scott Strahammer, registered a career-high 8 saves on the way to his tenth shutout of the season, his fourth in a row. Stahammer has not allowed a goal since the Cougars' 4-1 victory over Concordia on Oct. 6.

With the win, the Cougars improve to 15-1-1 overall, 7-0-1 in the GSAC and maintain their 1-game lead over Vanguard, which was a 2-1 winner at Westmont today. The Cougars need to beat Biola in La Mirada on Tuesday (Oct. 24) to win their third conference title in the past 5 years.

With the loss, Cal Baptist falls to 7-11 overall, 2-6 in the GSAC.
