Cougars Get GSAC Lead With Win

AZUSA, CALIF. -- The NAIA's No. 2-ranked Azusa Pacific hit the back of the net early and often in an 11-0 GSAC victory over Hope International. The win moves the Cougars past No. 1-ranked Westmont in the conference standings after the Warriors came up with only a 1-1 tie at Biola earlier this afternoon.

Chrissy Sanford and Kendra Payne each tallied 2 goals and 2 assists, and Rachel Messick added a pair of goals and an assist, as well. In all, 12 different Cougars etched their name onto the score sheet, including 8 different goalscorers.

Sanford opened the scoring at the 6:03 mark of the first half, sending a rocket into the goal after a cross from Payne at the front of the net. Payne scored the next goal at the 15 minute mark, and Messick scored the next 2 to give the Cougars a 4-0 lead after just 27:28 of play.

Azusa Pacific out-shot Hope International 36-3, including a 22-2 clip in the second half.

With the win, the Cougars improve to 13-2-3 overall and hold a half-game lead over Westmont for the GSAC lead with a 4-0-1 mark, while Hope International drops to 0-5 in the GSAC, 4-9 overall.
