Cougars Fall in GSAC Opener

FRESNO, CALIF.-- Goalkeeper Fransico Alvarez stopped a penalty kick then let Edgardo Contreras take care of the scoring as Fresno Pacific defeated Azusa Pacific, 3-0, in both teams' 1999 GSAC opener.

Contreras opened the scoring in the 22nd minute with his seventh goal of the season. He took a pass from Gerardo Alvarado and beat Cougar goalkeeper Mark Becher at a near impossible angle from the left side.

Then it was Alvarez' turn. The Cougars Matt Evans was hauled down in the box by Brent Hulstrom. Referee Steve Elliott award Evans a penalty kick. Evans drove the ball low to Alvarez' right. Alvarez dove right and deflected the ball out of danger.

"That was the turning point in the game," said FPU head coach Jaime Ramirez.

Cougar coach Don Lawrence agreed. "We score there, and it is a very different game," said Lawrence.

In the 62nd minute Alvarado fed a long ball to Contreras who again beat Becher on the left side. Then with just 5 minutes remaining in the game, Contreras scored on a corner kick, bending the ball past Becher and just inside the far post.

"I think the only way to stop him is to break his legs," Lawrence sarcastically added. "We tried to key on him, but he still beat us."

With the win, Fresno Pacific improves to 8-2-1 overall, while the Cougars fall to 4-6-1.
