AZUSA, CALIF. -- Azusa Pacific came into Saturday's doubleheader against Biola with some unfinished business to take care of, and the Cougars did so with rather impressive results, sweeping the Eagles, 9-8 and 2-1, in a GSAC doubleheader.
On Feb. 23, Biola handed Azusa Pacific its first GSAC loss, embarrassing the Cougars 10-0. Despite two other conference losses, Azusa Pacific entered Saturday's games just a half game behind Biola, needing a sweep to take possession of the conference lead.
The weather did not make it easy, and neither did Biola. In the first game, delayed three hours due to rain, the Cougars responded to an early 4-0 deficit by scoring six runs of their own in the 3rd and 4th innnings, capped by senior 2B Grady Sain's 2-run HR in the 4th inning that gave the Cougars a 6-4 lead.
The teams traded runs in the 5th, and Biola closed the gap to 7-6 on 3B Mark Wade's sacrifice fly that scored CF Nate Wright. Azusa Pacific starter Mike Kleckner was relieved following the run, and freshman Josh Herman mowed down 6 consecutive Biola batters, before giving up a 2-out single in the top of the 9th inning.
Biola starting pitcher Jonathon Rouwenhurst, also the DH for the game, took an 0-1 pitch over the right field fence to give Biola a 9-8 lead.
Senior 1B John Knott, whose 14-game hitting streak would have ended, had the Cougars held Biola scoreless in the final frame, extended his streak to 15 games, jumping on the first pitch of reliever Kris Mohn for a double. Pinch-hitter Karel Castro then blasted his 3rd HR of the season to help the Cougars extend their home winning streak to 19 games.
The second game was no less exciting than the first, although with a decidedly different flavor. While the first game featured 3 HR's, 17 runs, 23 hits, 4 errors, and 5 different pitchers, Game 2 was decided by pitching and defense. Biola's Ben Orr and Azusa Pacific's Fritz Maskrey both threw complete games, with Orr allowing only 3 hits, and Maskrey just 2.
Biola took the lead in the 2nd inning on Rand Wagner's RBI groundout, but Azusa Pacific DH Larry Long answered in the bottom half of the inning with a game-tying solo HR, his 2nd of the season.
Maskrey struggled through the 3rd and 4th innings, putting runners on with just one out, but was saved by his middle infield, who turned double plays to end both innings. Maskrey calmed down after that, retiring all nine batters in the final 3 innings, while striking out 7, to earn his 6th win of the season. He finished with 10 strikeouts in 7 innings of work.
While Maskrey quieted the Eagles' bats, Azusa Pacific drew consecutive 2-out walks before John Knott came up with his only hit of the 2nd game, an RBI infield single that extended both his personal hitting streak to 16 games, and the team's home winning streak to 20 games.
With the sweep, the Cougars improve to 21-5-1 overall and 13-3 in the GSAC.
