USD Takes 2 From Cougars

WEST COVINA, CALIF. -- Pitcher Misty Velke fired 5 innings of no-hit softball in the first game and then came on in relief in the nightcap to propel San Diego to a doubleheader sweep of Azusa Pacific, 6-0 and 5-4 in West Covina, Saturday afternoon.

In the first game, Velke stymied Azusa Pacific bats while striking out 3, and third baseman Mary Ann Cane provided all the offense Velke needed, going 3-for-4 at the plate with 4 RBIs, a run a double, and a home run. USD led 6-0 after the third inning and cruised in for the victory.

In the nightcap, Velke came on in relief of Amy Lopez and stranded the game-tying run at third base by getting the final 2 outs of the game. Kristy Clarke's 1-out single in the top of the seventh scored Cane to give the Toreros a 5-3 lead, but more importantly the game-winning run. Clarke finished the game 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, while Cane went 2-for-3 with 2 runs scored. USD was aided by 6 Cougar errors, which led to 4 unearned runs.

With the double setback, Azusa Pacific falls to 6-6 on the season.
