AZUSA, CALIF. -- Unlike the first meeting this season, Azusa Pacific made a match of it. But in the end, Westmont prevailed again, beating the Cougars, 15-12, 15-10, 9-15, 15-11, in a GSAC volleyball match in Azusa Tuesday night.
Azusa Pacific, which scored just 10 points in a 3-game loss at Westmont back on Sept. 14, appeared to be on the comeback trail this time. The Cougars rallied from a 2-0 game deficit by taking game 3, 15-9, thanks in part to the serving of sophomore Tori Hibbard. After jumping out to a 5-1 lead to start game 4, the Cougars fell victim to a hot Westmont which tallied 9 straight points to take control of game 4 at 10-5. However, the Cougars refused to quit and once again Hibbard led the way back with a pair of service aces. In time the Cougars caught Westmont at 11-11 and appeared to have taken a 12-11 lead when a Warrior attack went wide. However, Cougar All-American Jennifer French was called for touching the net, thus nullifying the point and giving the ball back to Westmont. The Warriors then scored 4 straight points and ended the match and all hopes of a Cougar upset.
All-American Tena Mensonides and Elsa Lubisch paced Westmont with 15 kills a piece. Mensonides had a team-high 5 blocks, including a key one in the fourth game that pushed the Westmont led to 14-11.
The Cougars were paced by Tishana Pope's 14 kills. Senior Izzy Bolles added 11 kills. French finished with 10 kills and a team-high 6 blocks (4 solo).
