It's a "Messy" Win

CARSON, CA--Sophomore midfielder Rachel Messick (Chino Hills, Calif./Ontario Christian HS) scored a goal and assisted on the game-winning goal by Lisa Lawrence (La Mirada, Calif./La Mirada HS) as 11th-ranked Azusa Pacific knocked off Cal State Dominguez Hills, 3-1, Monday afternoon in non-conference action. Messick crossed the ball to Lawrence off of a corner kick in the 72nd minute to give the Cougars the lead for good.

Azusa Pacific trailed early in the contest, yielding a goal to the Toros' Denise Alarcon in the 5th minute. However, the aggressive Azusa Pacific defense tightened and the Cougars tied things up in the 41st minute. Freshman Kimber Carter (Upland, Calif./Upland HS) shot a ball to the near post off of CSUDH goalkeeper Heather Williams' hands and into the net to make it 1-1 going into the break.

Messick added some insurance in the 86th minute when Lawrence set her up at the far post for the final goal of the match. The Cougars (4-0) are back in action tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. at NCAA Division I member Long Beach State.
