Barbone Gets No. 400 In Cougar Split

AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific salvaged a split with visiting Linfield College of Oregon, winning the second game 5–4, after losing the opener, 11 -9, in a baseball doubleheader in Azusa, Saturday afternoon. The second game victory was the 400th win in the 13-year career at Azusa Pacific for head coach Tony Barbone.

The Cougars won the second game dramatic fashion, scoring 2 runs with 2 outs in its final at-bat after Linfield had taken the lead with 4 runs in the sixth inning. Justin Duarte, who earlier in the game had a triple, doubled in Bobby Sanchez from first base to win the game. Sanchez had tied the game at 4-4 by singling in a run 5 pictures before Duarte's double.

Sanchez, Duarte, and Carlos de la Trinidad each had 2 hits for Azusa Pacific, while Jeff Scott and Tyler Marquart each had a pair of hits for Linfield. Chad Arko relieved Gabe Miranda in the sixth inning to pick up the win.

The first game saw Linfield explode out of the gate, racking up 7 runs in its first at-bat off starter David Doyle. Jeff Scott had a lead-off triple, while Duane Watanabe had a 3-run double. The Cougars tried to come all the way back with 3 runs in the third inning and 4 more in the fourth, but they could get no closer. Karel Castro homered for Azusa Pacific, while Ramon Ricabel and Miranda each went 3-for-5. Ricabel added two doubles.

With the split, Azusa Pacific falls to 16– 6–1.
