Hot Pitching, Cold Bats Quiet Cougars

AZUSA, Calif. -- Ruben Escobar pitched 8 shutout innings, scattering 5 hits and striking out 6, the lead The Masters College into a 6-0 nonconference victory Wednesday night over Azusa Pacific.

The Mustangs opened the game by tallying a run off starter Gabe Miranda courtesy of a 2-out double by Aaron Penberthy. They registered to more in the second half a sacrifice by Ty Seger an RBI single from Danny Cato. The Mustangs chalked up 1 more run in the fourth and 2 more in the sixth, and all 3 were unearned.

At the same time, Escobar had the Cougars number as he faced only one better over the minimum through 5 innings, issuing a walk and yielding a bunt-single to freshman Nate Philo. Only one Cougar advanced as far as third base and no more than 5 cougars came to the plate in any one inning.

Philo provided a few a few bright spots in center field, with 2 run-saving, diving catches. David Doyle and Rick Ackerman retired the final 9 Mustang batters to keep the game close for Azusa Pacific.

Sager went 1-for-3 with two runs scored in an RBI to lead the offensive attack for the Mustangs. Miranda and Mike Oliver had doubles for the Cougars.

When the win, the Mustangs improve the 5-3 overall, while the Cougars fall to 5-2-1.
