AZUSA, CALIF -- Sophomore forward Missy Myers tallied her fourth hat trick of the season as the NAIA's No.2-ranked Azusa Pacific shook off a slow start and defeated Cal Baptist, 8-0, in the opening round of the GSAC Postseason Tournament.
"We were so nervous and felt the pressure about finally being in the playoffs," said Cougar head coach Christian Johnson. "Once we settled down and let go of our nerves, we took over the game, especially in midfield."
Myers scored the opening 2 goals of the game, the first coming in the 22nd minute off of a low cross from Janay Duran. She got her second of the evening in the 41st minute after Kimber Carter took an errant throw from Lancer net-minder Candice Cook and rang a shot off of the crossbar. Myers was only a few feet away and put away the rebound to push the Cougar lead to 2-0 at the half.
"The first goal opened the flood gates," said Myers. "We couldn't settle down, we were just too excited to play."
The finale to Myers' hat trick came in the 72nd minute, coming this time from a Lisa Lawrence pass as the Cougars put in 4 goals in a 6 minute span midway through the second half. With the goal, Myers became Azusa Pacific's record holder for goals in a season (23) and points in a season (54), both set by teammate Kendra Payne last year.
"In August I would not have pictured a season like this," said Myers. "I just wanted to play my best and be selfless. I wanted to put God first this season."
The Cougars posted a GSAC record seventh straight shutout and their 13th of the campaign. They have now out-scored their foes 102-7 this season.
The victory ends the season for the Lancers, but the Cougars advance to the title game of the GSAC Postseason Tournament to be played in Azusa against Westmont this Saturday, Nov. 7, at 1 p.m.
