MOBILE, ALABAMA -- Two goals were scored in the opening match, Pool D action, at the 15th Annual NAIA Women's Soccer National Championship, played on the campus of the University of Mobile. That was all the scoring that No.4 Azusa Pacific needed, winning the game, 2-0, against No. 10 Lindsey Wilson College (Ky.).
Kendra Payne scored on a breakaway up the middle, in the 24th minute, as Azusa Pacific dominated play in the first half. The unassisted goal was Payne's 18th of the year. Early in the second half, neither team could get the upper hand, until Azusa Pacific's Janay Duran found Rachel Messick on a cross, and Messick put her 15th goal on the year in the net with a header in the 63rd minute to make the score 2-0.
Lindsey Wilson, now 0-1-0 in pool play, will play again tomorrow at 10 a.m. (PST) against No. 8 Houghton College (N.Y.). Azusa Pacific, now 1-0-0 in pool play will play again at 10 a.m. (PST) Wednesday, Nov. 25, also against Houghton. The teams from each pool with the best records in the round-robin phase of the tournament will advance to the semifinals, to be played Friday, Nov. 27.
