AZUSA, CALIF -- Sophomores Melissa Myers and Kendra Payne each scored three goals to lead the NAIA's No. 2-ranked Azusa Pacific to a 15-0 nonconference victory over Hope International today.
The 15 goals is a school and Golden State Athletic Conference record, breaking the former standard of 11, just set by this year's Cougars on September 30 against the same Hope International squad.
With the win, Azusa Pacific remains just 1 of 3 undefeated schools left in the NAIA, and at 16-0, has set another GSAC record with a 16-game unbeaten streak (Westmont was 14-0-1 in 1996).
The Cougars got on the board early, with goals from Andrea Alfiler, Jolie Robison, and Lisa Lawrence coming all within the game's first 9 minutes. APU never looked back, as it built a commanding 10-0 halftime lead.
Myers, who leads the GSAC in goals scored with 19, made her scoring contributions in the 32nd, 43rd, and 57th minutes, while attacking counterpart and All-American Payne added hers in the 39th, 59th, and 61st minutes.
The Cougars got two goals each from Lisa Lawrence and Kimber Carter, and leading off the bench were Celeste Mitchell and Kerri Sparks, who each recorded 2 shots and an assist.
