Cougars Make It 8 In A Row With Win Over La Verne

AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific continued its winning ways Tuesday night with a 4-2 victory over the University of La Verne in a non-conference match-up. The Cougars trailed most of the way, but continued to battle to come out on top in this nail-biter.

Shane Petrelli got things rolling for the cougars in their half of the second with a lead off double to right-center. He then scored on an RBI single by Dexter Davis to give the Cougars an early 1-0 lead. The Leopards got on the board with a 2-out, 2-RBI double by David LaPeer, putting in La Verne on top, 2-1.

The score remained unchanged until the bottom of the sixth when Jeff Couvoisier scored on a single off the top of the right field fence by Dirk Lewallyn, knotting the score at 2-2. The Cougars took a 3-2 lead any later when Jake Spahr scored after a defensive misscue by the Leopards. Steve Esquibel iced the game in the bottom of the eighth with a sacrifice fly, scoring pinch-hitter Ben Duncan from third base.

Reliever Tom Manning came in and pitched 4.1 scoreless innings to get the victory for Azusa Pacific. Chad Arko close things out in the ninth to record the safe.
