Spahr Single Gives Cougars Comeback Win

AZUSA, Calif. -- Jake Spahr roped a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth inning to give Azusa Pacific a come-from-behind 12–11 victory over Claremont-Mudd in a nonconference game Tuesday evening and Azusa. Hondo Godinez scored the winning run in a game that saw 5 lead changes and 2 ties.

The Stags started the scoring in the top of the first inning when Tyler Laughery brought in Karl Bracken with an RBI single followed by Dwayne Carey scoring on a throwing error. However, the Cougars answered in their half of the first, sending 11 men  to the plate and scoring 5 runs. Steve Esquibel started things by hitting his school record 22nd home run the season off a 0-2 fastball. Jeff Couvoisier, Mike Boyle and Shane Petrelli each had RBI singles to account for the reamining first-inning runs.

With the lead continually changing hands, the Cougars tied things up in the seventh inning with a 2-RBI single by Godinez. He led things off and the ninth with a base hit over second base. After a sacrifice bunt by Boyle, a walk to Petrelli and another single by Jason Young, the stage was set for Spahr.

Chad Arko pitched the ninth inning to get to win for the cougars.
