Cougar Win Streak Up To 5 Straight

AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific picked up right where they left off after returning home from Hawaii over spring break and hammered Westmont, 16–3. Seniors Dirk Lewallyn and Steve Esquibel each slammed a pair of home runs to power the Cougars 19-hit attack.

The first set of home runs came on consecutive pitches in the bottom of the first inning, putting the Cougars in front 2-0. Lewallen  homered again in the third inning, this time on a 3–2 count. Esquibel sealed the win with a 3–run shot over the right field fence in the bottom of the eighth inning to finish off the Warriors. Llewellyn finished the game 4-for-6 with four RBIs, and Esquibel went 2-for-4 with 3 runs scored and 4 RBIs.  Junior Jeff Couvoisier also pounded out 4 hits and scored 2 runs for the Cougars.

Junior Bobby Cowan went 7 strong innings, yielding only 2 earned runs on 6 hits and striking out 8 to get the victory, improving his record to 4–1. David Doyle pitched a final 2 innings in relief to seal the Cougars fifth consecutive victory.

Senior Scott McWhorter also had a solo home run in the second inning for Westmont. Senior Scott Deck had 2 hits for the Warriors.

With the victory Azusa Pacific improves to 23–10 overall, 9–4 in the GSAC. Westmont falls to 12-19 overall, 6–9 in the GSAC.
