Plethora of Miscue Lead to 10-3 Cougar Win

AZUSA, Calif. – Azusa Pacific was the beneficiary of an atrocious defensive effort by Westmont and gained an easy 10-3 conference win Tuesday afternoon.  Only 3 of the Cougars 10 runs were earned aided greatly by 9 Warrior errors.

The Cougars started the offensive charge in the bottom of the first inning, as did the comedy of errors.  A throwing error by Warrior pitcher David Ginn on a comebacker by Cougar leadoff hitter Jeff Courvoisier opened the door to a 4-run Cougar inning, thanks in part to singles by Dirk Lewallen and Shane Petrelli.

The third inning proved to be the same with 5 more Cougar runs on the strength of back-to-back doubles by Lewallen and Petrelli and another 4 Warrior errors.  The Cougars added another unearned run in the sixth when Couvoisier scored on a booted ball off the bat of Steven Esquibel.

Fritz Maskrey picked up win on the mound, going 6 strong innings, allowing just 1 run and 2 hits while striking out 6.

Westmont was paced by solo home runs from Larry Coots and Ryan Weeks.  Scott Deck scored the only other Warrior run of an RBI double by Eric Lewis in the eighth inning.
