Cougars Beat Heritage To Gain Finals Berth

AZUSA, CALIF. -- Azusa Pacific moved into the championship game of the Applebee's Southern California Shoot-Out with a convincing 106-75 victory over Christian Heritage College Friday night in Azusa.

The Cougars canned a season-high 15 3-pointers (1 shy of the school-record) which led to their fifth century-point game of the season, and their second in a row. Senior forward Micah Sullivan led 6 Cougars in double-digit scoring with a game-high 18 points, thanks in part to a pair of treys. Junior guard Jason Boswell was a perfect 4-for-4 from the arc and scored 14 points. In all 7 different Cougars made at least 1 3-pointer, and as a team, Azusa Pacific finished the game 15-for-28 (.536) from 3-point territory.

"Once we get started outside, we're hard to stop," said Boswell. "Nate (Getz) did a good job of kicking it out when they doubled down on him."

Azusa Pacific scored the game's first 13 points and jumped out to a comfortable 23-9 lead less than 8 minutes into the game. The Cougars were red hot from the field, burying 6 of their first 8 3-pointers, capped by Andy Newman's trey that put Azusa Pacific up 31-16 at 9:29 of the first half. Boswell's 3-pointer, the seventh of the first half, gave Azusa Pacific its first 20-point cushion at 49-29 with just over a minute to play in the half.

Christian Heritage, which never got any closer than 18 points down in the second half, was paced by Phil Ball's 16 points off the bench. Josh Layton added 15.

The Cougar defense held Christian Heritage to just 50 shot attempts and forced the Hawks into a hefty 29 turnovers. As a result, Azusa Pacific defeated Christian Heritage for the 12th consecutive time and has not lost to the Hawks since 1990.

"I think we've shown that we can play with people," said Cougar coach Bill Odell, "and anybody we have played this season, we've risen to the occasion."

With the win, Azusa Pacific, the Shoot-Out's defending champion, improves to 9-2 and will meet tourney co-host Cal Poly Pomona for another Southern California Shoot-Out title at 8 p.m. on Saturday (Dec. 20) in Azusa.. Christian Heritage falls to 8-6 and will meet Humboldt State for third place at 6 p.m. in Azusa.
