AZUSA, CALIF. -- Junior center
Nate Getz, whose put-back with 26 seconds left lifted Azusa Pacific to an 88-86 victory over Southern California College Tuesday night, came to the Cougars' rescue again, converting a pair of 3-point plays in the final 2 minutes to lead the NAIA's No. 21-ranked Azusa Pacific to an 82-74 victory over Concordia in a GSAC game in Azusa Saturday night.
Down by 11 (50-39) with 13:46 left in regulation, Concordia rallied on the strength of Rick Haywood's 13 second-half point to take a 64-63 lead with 5:41 to play.
However, Azusa Pacific scored 8 of the game's next 12 points to go back on top. With the Cougars still up 74-72, Getz put back a
Jason Boswell miss and in the process was fouled by Haywood. Getz' subsequent free throw gave the Cougars a 77-72 lead with 1:46 left in the game. After a pair of Josh Giles free throws pulled the Eagles back to within 3 with a minute to play, Getz made a lay-up and was fouled by Kalim Scott. Getz, who was 6-for-8 from the free throw line on the night, converted the free throw to put the Cougars up an unsurmountable 80-74 with 28 seconds left to play.
Matt Zaengle, who had a team-high 15 points in a reserve role, led a Cougar bench that out-scored Concordia's bench, 45-13. Ty Clark had 12 points off the bench, and Getz finished with 10, including all 6 second-half points that came in the final 2 minutes of play.
Concordia was led by Haywood's 21 points and Scott's 13.
The victory is Azusa Pacific's 11th straight at home and improves the Cougars' overall record 15-5, 2-0 in the GSAC. Concordia falls to 7-10 overall, 0-2 in the GSAC.
