AZUSA, CALIF. -- Justin Conant's 2-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning scored
Greg Folsome from third base to lift Azusa Pacific to a 5-4 victory over Concordia and give the Cougars a doubleheader sweep of the Eagles. Combined with Point Loma Nazarene's doubleheader loss at home to Westmont, Azusa Pacific moves into sole possession of first place in the Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC).
Azusa Pacific won the first game, 8–3, scoring five runs in the first inning to jump out to a 5-1 lead. Darin Schorr's 2-run home run, his third of the season, was the big blow in 3-run second inning. Pitcher
Dirk Lewallen, who had a solo homer in the fifth, his fifth of the season, went the first seven innings, allowing 6 hits while striking out 4, to pick up his fourth win of the season. Folsom was 2-for-4 in the first game with a pair of triples and three RBIs. Concordia was led by the GSAC's leading hitter Derrick Bly, who went 2-for-3, with a triple and a ninth inning solo home run, his seventh of the season.
In the second game, Azusa Pacific ralied with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Lewallen and
Mark Rogers led off with back-to-back dobule with Rogers' scoring Llewellyn, Rogers then scored to tie the game 4-4 and
Jason Young's 2-out single. Folsom led off the seventh-inning with an apparent home run . However, Concordia Coach Jackie Schnieppare you to the ball went through the fence and not over. He prevailed and Folsom and was sent back to second base to set up Conant's later heroics. Steve Buhagiar picked up the win in relief to improve his record to 4–0. Ernie Silva suffered the loss to 1-2.
Azusa Pacific, ranked No.19 in NAIA, improves to 17–8 overall and 12–4 in the GSAC to take over first place by 1 game over Point Loma Nazarene. Concordia, which has never won in Azusa (now losing 17 street in the Canyon City), falls to 12–16–1 overall and 5-11 and the GSAC.
