Cal Baptist Balks Win To Cougars

AZUSA, Calif. -- Reliever Pat Vitamanti's 1-out balk in the bottom of the ninth inning scored pinch runner Ben Duncan from third base to give Azusa Pacific a 6–5 Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) baseball victory over Cal Baptist in Azusa Tuesday afternoon.

Vitamanti, who came on in relief of JP Hamilton to start to ninth-inning, hit leadoff hitter Tom Boulware on his first pitch. Duncan replaced Boulware at first and went to second and Daren Schorr's sacrifice. After Jeff Kruey walked, Pinch hitter Jason Conant singled tp left to send Duncan to third and load the bases. With the count 2-2 to Dexter Davis, Vitamanti was charged with a bark to push Duncan across the plate to end the game, thus handing Azusa Pacific it's seventh straight victory and it's 11th in the past 14 games.

Azusa Pacific jumped out to a 4-1 thanks in part to Dirk Lewallyn's fourth home run of the season. However, Cal Baptist rallied to eventually tie the score at 5-5 when Vitamanti, then the third baseman, doubled home Ramsey Altawaji with 1 out in the seventh. Vitamanti later tried to score on Jose Gonzalez's single but was thrown out at home by Kurey from leftfield.

Cougar pitcher Gabe Miranda came on a relief and pitched 1-hit ball over the final 2.1 innings to pick up his first collegiate win.

Schorr went 2-for-4 with a home run, his second of the season, to aid Azusa Pacific. Cal Baptist was led by Gonzalez, who was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Altawaji was 1-4-3 with 2 runs and an RBI.

Azusa Pacific, which is ranked No. 19 in NAIA, pushes it record to 14–8 overall, 10–4 in the GSAC. Cal Baptist falls to 8-16 overall, 4-10 in the GSAC.
