APU Wears Down SCC

AZUSA, CALIF. -- For the NAIA's No. 13-ranked Azusa Pacific, Saturday nights 90-72 victory over GSAC rival Southern Cal College was anything but an 18 point victory. In a game that produced 11 lead changes and six ties, Azusa Pacific finally surged ahead by using a 19 -4 run over the final 7 minutes of the game to break open what had otherwise been a tight battle for first place in the GSAC.

Azusa Pacific led by just six points (76-70) with 4:29 left in the game, but then shifted its offense into high gear, scoring 12 consecutive points to take a comfortable 88-70 lead with just 58 seconds left in the game.

Azusa Pacific's Eric Wattree led all players with 20 points (10 in each half) and guard Ricky Blackmon came off the bench to toss in 16 points. SCC was led by Eric Walker's 15 points and Jason Janeski's10 points and 11 rebounds.

Neither team led by more than 4points throughout the first 33 minutes of the game. SCC's last lead came at 63 -61 with 9:50 to play before Azusa Pacific 'sTim Sebek, who scored all 8of his points in the second half, canned the first of his 2three-pointers to give the Cougars the lead for good at 64-63 at the 9-minute mark.

Azusa Pacific improves its winning streak to 6 games and it's homecourt winning streak to 14 street. The Cougars are 53-4 in Azusa since 1993. Overall on the season, Azusa Pacific is 21-5 and moves a half-game ahead of idle Westmont in the GSAC standings with an 8-2 conference mark. SCC suffers its second straight loss and falls 2games behind the Cougars in the GSAC race. The Vanguards are 15-10 overall, 6-4 in the GSAC.
