Concordia Get Hot, Rolls over Cougars

AZUSA, CALIF. -- Concordia made 17 of its first 20 shots in the second half, including five 3-pointers and went on to upset the NAIA's No. 9-ranked Azusa pacific, 112–96, in the Cougardome Tuesday night, and then the process snapped Azusa Pacific's 13-game home court winning streak.

Tarik James scored 27 points, including 20 in the second half, to lead Concordia, which trailed by nine points (35-26) with five minutes left in the first half and was down by three (46-43) at halftime. However, James led a blazing Concordia, making 7-of-9 shots in the second half, including a 4-for-4 clip from the three-point arc. As a team, the Eagle shot a blistering 76.7% (23-for-30) in the second half, explaining why they scored 69-second half points.

Rick Haywood added 20 points off the bench for the Eagles, including 13 in the second half.

Azusa Pacific, which hadn't lost at home since February of 1995, shot a paltry 16-of-28 (57.1%) from the line, including a miserable 3-of-10 in the first half when the Cougars had an opportunity to jump out to a double-digit lead but was unable. The Cougars were led by Chris Bethel's career-high 24 points. Tim Sebek added 23 points before fouling out.

The defeat stops Azusa Pacific's 6-game winning streak and drops the Cougars back into a first-place tie with Westmont in the GSAC title chase. The Cougars are 21-6 overall, 8-3 in the GSAC. Concordia, seeking its first GSAC championship ever, pulled to within a game of first place and improves to 18-8 overall, 7-4 in the GSAC.
