FRESNO, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific used double-figure scoring from 5 players to the beat Fresno Pacific, 76-61, in the Special Event Center, Tuesday night in the Golden State Athletic Conference opener for both teams.
The Cougars built in early 14-4 lead and out-scored the Sunbirds, 17-9 in the final six minutes of the first half to take a commanding 40-24 lead at the break.
The Sunbirds cut the lead to 12 (52-40) with 11:25 to play, but the Cougars responded with a 12-0 run over the next five minutes to put the game out of reach.
Christy Brock led the Cougars with 18 points. She had plenty of help from
Christy Heyer (14),
Kelly Speas (13), Jennifer, Felger, (12), and
Andrea Macciola(10). Macciola also pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds.
Angela Laney led the ice-cold Sunbirds with 13 points before fouling out. This Sunbirds shot 38% (24-for-63) from the field, including 16% (3-for-19) from three point range and 46% (10-for-22) from the free throw line.
Tameka Harold, in early foul trouble, had 11 points and 9 rebounds for the Sunbirds, while Renee Longshore added 10 points and 11 rebounds.
