Late Burst Leads Cougars

Azusa Calif. -- Azusa Pacific used a 17-hit attack, including a 4-for-5 performance from right fielder Tony Gonzalez, to defeat Cal state San Bernardino, 7–3, in a nonconference game Wednesday in Azusa.

Gonzalez, making his first start in right field in two weeks due to a shoulder injury, had four singles, drove into runs and scored another. First baseman Mark Rogers also chipped in with 3 hits, including a leadoff home run in the bottom of the sixth inning which tied the game at 3–3.

The Cougars scored the winning run later in the sixth inning on a 2-out single by catcher Mike Boyle which brought home center fielder Jeff Kurey.

On the mound, senior reliever Joe Elias (3–1) pitched the final four innings, allowing no runs and only 2 hits to earn the victory. Coyote reliever Rosie Haro (0-1), one of five San Bernardino pitchers used on the day, was tagged with Los.

With the victory, Azusa Pacific extends its winning streak to eight games, and improves its record to 28–7.  Cal state San Bernardino falls to 18–16.
