Cougars Sweep GSAC Track Titles

AZUSA, Calif. -- Azusa Pacific won 12 of 20  men's events and 12 of 18 women's events to sweep the men's and women's titles of the 8th Annual Golden State Athletic Conference (GSAC) Track & Field Championship Meet in Azusa, Saturday.

The Cougar men, who have won all 8 GSAC crowns since the conference was formed in 1986, complied a meet record 205 points, wiping out the 5-team field.  With its best finish ever, Westmont was second with 91 points, followed by Point Loma Nazarene (82), Fresno Pacific (27), and Southern California College (10).

The Cougars won 6 of 8 field events, led by junior Rene Bustamante who won both the discus (155' 6") and shot put (52' 8 3/4").  Sophomore Hong Li won the long jump with a meet record jump of 24' 9 3/4".

The Lady Cougars tallied 144 points to better Westmont, which like the Warrior men had their best showing in the GSAC Championship, finishing with 92 points.  Point Loma Nazarene was third with 72 points, followed by Fresno Pacific (31), and Southern California College (9).  The championship was the fourth straight women's title for Azusa Pacific and sixth in eight years.

In their 12 event victories, the Lady Cougars collected wins in all 6 field events, led by senior Debbie Malachowski, who for the third time in her 4-year career swept the shot (38' 10 1/4"), discus (142' 6"), and the javelin (127' 0").  She now holds a conference record 9 GSAC individual titles.  Sophomore sprinter Fatima Yusuf shattered the conference records in winning the 100 meters (11.69, breaking the old standard of 12.22 set in 1992 by Point Loma's Dzifia Mac-Kwashie) and 200 meters (23.80, breaking the old mark of 25.66 also set in 1992 by Mac-Kwashie).

Westmont's Misty Allen won the women's 5000 meters in a GSAC record time of 17:50.59.  Point Loma's Lupe Ambriz set a pair of GSAC records in winning the 1500 meters (4:37.63) and 3000 meters (10:05.27) while teammate Jeannine Davie set a GSAC record in winning the 800-meters at 2:18.01.

Besides Li's mark in the long jump, other men's records established Saturday were by Azusa Pacific's Luke Walker in the pole vault (17' 2"), Point Loma's Nery Kennedy in the javelin (229' 9") and Westmont's Todd Farrington in the 5000-meters (14:54.8).
