History In The Making

AZUSA, CALIF. -- Azusa Pacific became the first team in Golden State Athletic Conference history to win back-to-back GSAC titles out-right after posting 115-93 victory over Point Loma Nazarene, Tuesday night in the Cougardome.

With the victory, the Cougars, who are the NAIA's No. 9-ranked team, push their overall record to 24-3 and their GSAC slate to a title-clinching 9-1. Point Loma Nazarene, which entered the game in second place, falls to 13-13 overall and 5-4 in the GSAC.

Senior guard Scott Day, who is seventh on the all-time Azusa Pacific scoring list, tossed in a team-high 22 points, thanks in part to a 6-for-6 performance from the three-point territory. Day was one of six cougars to score in double figures. Senior forward Ronnie Winbush added 19, as did freshman reserve Raymond Tutt.

The victory was Azusa Pacific's school-record 26th straight at home.

Senior Derryck Thornton enjoyed an outstanding all-around game, posting 13 points, nine rebounds, and eight assists for the cougars.

Point Loma Nazarene was led by forward Beau Pack, who tossed in a game high 23 points.
