LA JOLLA, Calif. -- UC San Diego avenged a 30-point loss at Azusa Pacific 3 weeks by rallying from 7 down in the second half to take a see-saw 74-66 verdict Friday night in NAIA District III Southern Division play.
Azusa Pacific had rallied from a 6-point halftime deficit to take a 56-49 lead midway through the second half. However, behind Dana Bedard's game-high 20 points, the Tritons rallied, going on a 12-5 run to tie the game at 61-61 with 6:20 to play and eventually closing the game on a 25-10 run to claim their first victory over Azusa Pacific since 1974 and snapping a 10-game losing streak to the Cougars.
Kevin Douglas came off the bench to aid Bedard's play with 12 points of his own while Tony Filer chipped in with 10.
Junior
Larry Shelton led 4 Cougars in double-digit scoring with a team-high 14 points.
Mike Anderson had 12.
In APC's 117-87 victory in Azusa back on Jan. 18, the Cougars leaned on 37 made free throws to collect the blowout win. Tonight, however, they went to the line just 9 times, making 6 free throws.
