PHOENIX, Ariz. -- All-American Ron Williams scored 38 points and Jay Hibbert added 17 as Western Montana torched Azusa Pacific, 100-77, in the opening game of the Grand Canyon Tournament in Phoenix, Ariz., Friday evening.
Williams led a quartet of Bulldogs in double-digit scoring as Western Montana handed APC its worse loss since it suffered a similar 23-point setback at Point Loma (104-81) last year. A combination of hot and cold shooting determined the Cougars' eventual fate. APC shot at a paltry .411 (30-for-73) clip from the floor while Western Montana, led by Williams, shot a .617 pace, making 37-of-69 field goal attempts.
Juniors
Larry Shelton (25 points) and
Mike Anderson (14) were the only Cougars in double-digit scoring. The pair also grabbed team-high 9 rebounds each.
With the victory, Western Montana moves to 5-4 on the season while the Cougars fall to 7-3. APC will take on Occidental, a 73-53 loser to tourney host Grand Canyon in the other Friday game, at 7 p.m. Saturday evening.
