AZUSA -- Put another feather in Azusa Pacific's hat. Better yet, raise a toast to
Benny Jackson. David knocked off Goliath again.
The Cougars, representing a campus population of roughly 850, took on the monsters from Cal Poly Tuesday night and struck another firm blow for the little guy as they road Jackson's sizzling second half shot-making to a 93-91 victory over the Broncos before 750 frenzied fans in the Azusa Pacific gym.
It was almost a carbon copy of last year's 93-92 Cougar triumph and the biggest smile in the place, naturally, belonged to Cougar coach Cliff Hamlow whose placid countenance belied the furious finish.
"We adjusted our offense in the second half but I couldn't believe it in the first half. The guys were just standing around," Hamlow grinned.
Jackson, the sophomore flash from Detroit, turned it on full throttle in the final 20 minutes and dazzled the Broncos with a fascinating array of shots. Content to act as a play-maker, he tallied only point in the opening half but ran wild in the second, hitting on nine of 14 attempts. It was Jackson's 22-footer, his third straight from the field, that put the Cougars ahead to stay at 91-89 with 75 second left after the lead had switched hands 13 times and had been tied seven other occasions.
A pair of free throws by
Harold Callicoat wrapped around Cleo Robinson's basket for the Broncos preserved the victory and the Broncs receipted for their third straight loss as Doug Shinn's desperation hook at the buzzer fell short. The Cougars are now 2-1.
But Jackson could not have done it alone and there were other heroes for the plucky Cougars.
Chuck Boswell, for instance. Boswell, although surrendering several inches and a good deal of muscle to the like of Robinson and Jim Brown of Cal Poly, battle gamely under the boards and still found time to contribute a game high of 23 points, 14 coming in the first half when he prevented the Broncos from running away and hiding.
Callicoat also turned in a solid performance and chalked up 18 while guard
Gary Lawson contributed 12 and the other starter, smooth
Dennis Dickens, 10. Robinson was tops for Poly with 19 and was a tiger on the boards all night while Charlie Buchanan registered 18 for Coach Bob Stull's aggregation and Brown added 12.
Cal Poly, after leading by six at one point -- the largest separation of the night between the teams -- came away from a sloppily played first half with a 43-41 lead and were ahead by five, 83-78, with 5:30 left to go. But a turn-around 10-footer by Jackson and his 20-footer from the baseline kept the Cougars alive. As a team they shot 54 per cent from the floor.
The volatile Stull also had two technical called o him and Boswell converted both -- the eventual margin of victory.
Stull wasn't happy with the officiating. "That's the worst we've had this year but we were to blame, too. Our press didn't do the job and we were pretty bad defensively," he commented.
"But that Jackson, he's some shooter."
Cougar fans will second that motion.
