THIS YEAR: A quality all-around athlete, walk-on freshman Sophia Nielsen expects to spend the year growing into college competition … Excels in the sprints and hurdles, but will focus on the jumps this year … Has a promising future ahead of her.
HIGH SCHOOL: Lettered in four different sports at South Whidbey High in Langley, Wash. … Ran four seasons of track & field, competing in the sprints, hurdles, and jumps … As a 2018 senior helped lead the Falcons to a Top Ten finish at the Washington 1A state meet by having a hand in 16 of the team’s 23 points … Won the state 1A title in the long jump with a personal-record leap of 18’ 1” … Was fifth in the triple jump (34’ 3¼”) in the same meet, and finished eighth in the 100 hurdles (16.76) … Clocked a personal-best 15.26 in the 100 hurdles to win the Washington 1A District 1 championship … As a 2017 junior competed in four different events in the Washington State Championship Meet at Eastern Washington University, finished third in the triple jump (persona-record 35’ 9¾”), seventh in the 300 hurdles (47.63), and eighth in the long jump (16’ 2½”) … Did not advance out of the prelims in the 100 hurdles … Recorded a personal record of 46.30 in 300 hurdles at the Washington district meet … Also lettered in basketball, volleyball, and cheerleading.
