THIS YEAR: A persistent and enduring athlete, senior Cindy Carabes is an experienced distance runner who has run in over 30 track and cross country races for Azusa Pacific … Excels in the 5000 but can dabble in races as short as the 1500.
2018 (junior): Battled injuries most of the season, appearing in just 5 meets before shutting down the season following the Bryan Clay Invitational in mid-April … Clocked a career and season-best of 19:14.91 in the 5000 at the Oxy Distance Carnival.
2017 (sophomore): Competed in 7 meets, including the PacWest Championships, where she finished 12thin the 5000 with a 19:56.70 … Recorded a 5000 career-best of 19:49.20 at the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational.
2016 (freshman): Trained with the Cougars but did not compete in any meets.
HIGH SCHOOL: Ran 4 seasons of track & field and 4 of cross country for head coach Dan Whittington at Whittier (Calif.) High … As a 2014 senior posted personal records on 2:33.0 in the 800, 5:31.25 in the 1600, and 11:53.45 in the 3200, in which she qualified for the CIFs … Helped lead the Cardinals to the Del Rio League championship … As a 2013 junior at the Del Rio League championships finished seventh in the 1600 (5:55.41) and tenth in the 3200 (12:20.11) … Was a 3-time scholar-athlete honoree.
PERSONAL: Born Oct. 12, 1996 … Mother is Maricela Carabes … Has 3 sisters (Melissa, Jen, Ashley – who is a freshman on the Cougar track & field team) … Majoring in kinesiology … Attended San Francisco State for one semester out of high school but did not compete in sports.
