THIS YEAR: One of 3 freshmen distance runners to join the Cougars this year, Ashley Carabes has a promising collegiate track & field future ahead of her … Will use her freshman season adjusting to collegiate competition, building strength and endurance to go along with her speed … Gives the Cougars good depth in the distance events.

CROSS COUNTRY: Appeared in 5 of the Cougars’ 7 meets during the 2017 cross country season … Finished 34th out of 93 runners at the PacWest Championship Meet in Fresno, clocking a 6K time of 23:47.4, a near half-minute improvement over her prior season best.

HIGH SCHOOL: Competed 4 seasons in cross country and track & field for head coach Oscar Montano at Whittier (Calif.) High … Endured an injury-shortened 2018 senior campaign, competing in just 4 meets … As a 2017 junior posted personal records of 5:32.79 in the 1600 and 11:55.55 in the 3200 … Finished fifth in the 3200 at the Del Rio League championship meet … Enjoyed a full 2016 sophomore season, appearing in 11 meets and showing steady improvement over the course of the competition, finishing the season with a season-best 11:57.88 in the 3200 … As a 2015 freshman finished third in 3200 (12:23.33) and 6th in the 1600 (5:57.42) at the Del Rio League championship meet at La Mirada High.

PERSONAL: Born Nov. 20, 2000 … Mother is Maricela Carabes … Has 3 sisters (Melissa, Jen, Cindy – who is also a member of the Cougar track & field team) … Majoring in Kinesiology.
