THIS YEAR:  The emotional leader of Azusa Pacific, senior guard Monica Somers is a fearless player ... Has many skills ... Can shoot from the perimeter with accuracy but is among the best in the GSAC at taking the ball to the basket ... An excellent defender as well ...
Relentless in her effort and does not shy away from physical play ... Does not lack for confidence ... Needs 73 more free throws made to break the school career record of 476 ... Should push for postseason honors. 

2006:  As a 2006 junior, appeared in all 34 games, starting 24, including 18 of the final 19 of the season ... Was second on the team in scoring (13.8 avg.)  and assists (3.2 avg.) ... Scored in double figures 26 times, including the final 14 of the season ... Tallied a career-high 29 points in a victory at arch-rival Biola and then came back 2 weeks later to post her first-ever 30-point effort with 31 points in a win at California Baptist ... Made 164 free throws, the third highest single-season total in program history ... Registered 19 points and a career-high 10 assists in a season-opening win at Westminster. 

2005:  Appeared in 35 games, making 16 starts … Was third on the team with an average of 12.3 points … Was second on the team with 133 field goals … Led the team in free throw attempts and makes (152-of-197) … Scored a career-high 28 points leading the Cougars to a season-opening win over Holy Names … Scored in double figures 23 times … Combined to score 47 points and grab 10 rebounds in a pair of wins over GSAC rival Westmont … Had an outstanding performance in win over Oklahoma City with 16 points, 7 rebounds and 6 assists … Dropped 17 points in 28 minutes against Vanguard. 

2004:  Appeared in 30 games, starting 5 … Averaged 7.6 points and 1.9 rebounds … Also had 66 assists and 29 steals … Ranked tenth in the GSAC in free throw percentage (.772) hitting 88-of-114 from the line … Reached double figures in scoring 11 times … Led the Cougars in scoring twice … Led the Cougars with 17 points in her collegiate debut in a win over Westminster (Utah) in the season opener … Scored a season-high 18 points, going 10-of-13 from the free throw line, to go along with 4 rebounds, 3 assists and a career-high 6 steals in 24 minutes in a win over Fresno Pacific … Notched 17 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds against GSAC champion Vanguard … Added 12 points, 5 assists and 4 rebounds against NCAA Division II power Cal Poly Pomona … Reached double-figures in 3 straight games, including a 10-point, 3-assist performance against the NAIA’s No. 5-ranked Brescia (Ky.) followed by an 11-point (9-for-9 free throws), 4-assist game vs. Pikeville (Ky.) … Grabbed a season-high 5 rebounds twice, including against North Georgia State at the NAIA Tournament. 

HIGH SCHOOL:  Prepped 4 varsity seasons for head coach Joe Teramoto at San Luis Obispo (Calif.) High … Was a 2-time All-PAC-5 and team MVP … As a 2003 senior, averaged 15.7 points, 2.1 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 4.1 steals in leading the Tigers to a 22-2 overall mark, a PAC-5 championship and an appearance in the CIF Playoffs … Named All-PAC-5 MVP and All-CIF Division III first team … Had single-game highs of 36 points and 8 assists … As a 2002 junior, averaged 12.7 points, 3.2 assists and 2.1 steals while leading the Tigers to a 20-3 mark … Also ran track (sprints, hurdles) and cross country, earning a top 50 finish at the CIF Southern Section Cross Country Finals as a 2002 junior. 

PERSONAL:  Born March 19, 1985, in San Diego, Calif., to Scott Smith and Linda Somers … Majoring in athletic training and wants to be a physical therapist.
