Sue Hebel is in her 11h year as head coach of Azusa Pacific women's basketball program. In 1984 she founded Azusa Pacific's athletic training program and still serves as its director.
Under Hebel's guidance, the Lady Cougars have won 53 of their past 70 games, which includes last year's school-best 30-5 record. As a result, she has been named NAIA District III Coach-of-the-Year the past two seasons. She had led Azusa Pacific to the NAIA national tournament twice (1981 & 1986) and has coached five All-Americans since 1980.
Hebel gained intercollegiate basketball experience at Biola College from where she graduated in 1975. There she established several school records (since broken) and guided the Lady Eagles to two league titles and one AIAW playoff berth. Since her graduation from Biola, Hebel has played for or coached American teams that toured the Far East, Asia, and Europe during the summer months, including last summer's trip to New Zealand.
The owner of a doctorate in education, Hebel arrived at Azusa Pacific in the fall of 1976. She directed the Lady Cougars to victory in 29 of her first 36 games. In 1981 her Lady Cougars finished fourth at the NAIA Tournament. In 1985 her team placed sixth at the National Christian College Tournament in Ohio. In the spring of 1986, she put the Lady Cougars back in the NAIA Tournament after the Azusa Pacific won its third NAIA District III title in six years.
