The 2017-18 season will be Matt Houser's third as an assistant coach for the women's basketball team.
He comes to Azusa after serving as an assistant coach last season for Concordia (Calif.) University. During the Eagles historic 2014-2015 season, he helped turn a 15-18 team around into a 23-7 team. Concordia reached the sixth spot national ranking and helped the Eagles to the league title. Concordia would also reach the NAIA National tournament and win its first tournament game in school history.
Before coming to Concordia Houser was the head coach at Santa Margarita Catholic High School for five years. In his first year he won the CIF 3A title and took the team to state semi-regionals. He was awarded CIF Coach of the year in 2010. He then helped coach his 2013-2014 team to a 3A CIF title again. This time helping them get all the way to the State Regionals Runner up. He was awarded CIF Coach of the year for 2014 and was O.C. Sidelines Orange County Coach of the Year. He is one of just two head coaches in Orange County to win CIF twice in five years. Houser also started OC Elite Inc. OC Elite Inc. each year has been voted on of the top 100 girl's high school club basketball programs in the nation. OC Elite also was one of 20 program sponsored by Adidas. Houser was on the board of Adidas grassroots for the west coast. He also helps coach at the Adidas 3 Strips USA Elite Training Camp for the top 20 players in the nation who are picked from the top Adidas sponsored programs.
Matt Houser has coached his OC Elite National teams to Championships in a number of NCAA showcase tournaments, Adidas Hardwood Champions, Best of the West Champions, Elite Summer Showcase Champions, Elite Spring Showcases Champions and the Arizona Elite Spring Showcase Champions among other titles.
Houser also started Elite Tournaments Inc. which hosts nationally known club tournaments, locally and for NCAA showcase purposes. He brought in some of the nation's top club teams while also hosting a few hundred college coaches to view the teams in his tournaments.
Houser also started Elite Recruiting Inc. This was a scouting report that help his players get on and showcase themselves to college coaches around the nation.
Prior to running his company's and coaching Matt played professional basketball for eight years. He played in Germany, Switzerland, France, and Portugal. During his professional career he has received League MVP, Euro Cup All Tournament, Team MVP, and Switzerland All Defensive Team. He played at Chico State (1998-2000), Irvine Valley College (1996-1998) and went to Laguna Hills High School; graduating in 1996.
He earned his Bachelors of Science in Business Management at the University of Phoenix. He completed his master's in Coaching and Athletic Administration at Concordia in 2016. Matt is married to Silvia and the couple have two children, Logan and Clark.
