Biography

THIS YEAR:  Senior outfielder Michelle Valenzuela is a key player in the Cougar outfield ... will probably split time with Cappell in right field but can play center as well ... Is a strong fundamental player ... Always gives more than needed ... Hits the ball hard ... Ideal eighth or ninth hitter in the line-up because of her speed.

LEHMAN SAYS:  "Michelle is the ultimate team player.  She is a leader by example.  Nobody beats her work ethic.  She is gaining confidence.  She has a tremendous arm and make makes very good decisions in the outfield."  

1996:  As a 1996 junior, started the first 17 games, then missed the next 22 games after being spiked on the arm sliding into second base on an attempted steal ... Hit .210 (13-for-62) in 27 games ... Made just 1 error in the outfield ... Went 3-for-6 in a doubleheader split vs. Cal State Dominguez Hills  before being hurt in that second game ... Had 2 RBIs in the final game of the season vs. Hawaii Pacific ... Scored 2 runs in games vs. Biola and UC Riverside.

JUNIOR COLLEGE:  Played 2 years at Mt. San Antonio Community College in Walnut, Calif. ... Named All-South Coast Conference second team as a 1993 freshman ... Selected team's best defensive player as a 1994 sophomore.

HIGH SCHOOL:  Was a 4-year All-Whitmont League selection at Santa Fe High in Santa Fe Springs, Calif. ... Also won all-league second team honors in soccer ... ran corss country as well and was a 2-time team MVP ... Named Santa Fe's best senior athlete.

PERSONAL:  Born April 1, 1974, in Artesia, Calif., to Joseph and Noreen Valenzuela ... Majoring in psychology at Azusa Pacific .... Wants to eventually earn a master's degree and work with victims of abuse ... Favorates include Shawshank Redemption (movie), Friends (TV show) and Reba McEntire (musician).
