Biography

THIS YEAR: Senior Megan Alkire looks to regain the All-GSAC form of her 2003 sophomore season … Is healthy and is at full strength after having last season cut short by an injury … Has a powerful bat and should be among the GSAC's top run producers … Is also a good pitcher who was beginning to flash signs of dominance last year when her season abruptly ended … Should push for conference honors with her bat, but could also make it as a pitcher as well.

2004: Appeared in 39 of the Cougars' 47 games, batting .273 with a team-high 4 home runs (tying sister Rachel Alkire) … Was 6-5 in the pitcher's circle with a 2.70 earned run average and was second on the team with 44 strikeouts in 67.1 innings of work … Batted .342 through the first 12 games of the season … Had 7 multiple-hit games (all Cougar victories), including a trio of 3-hit contests … Was 2-for-3 with a double, home run and 5 RBIs in an 11-5 victory at UC San Diego … Struck out just 4 times in 134 plate appearances … As a pitcher, fired a 6-inning complete-game, 1-hit shutout at Bethany, striking out 7 in the process … Put together back-to-back efforts in which she struck out 17 in 15 innings of work, including a career-high 9 in a 4-3 victory over Dominican … Missed 7 of the final 10 games with a shoulder injury that also ended her pitching duties … Named NAIA All-American Scholar-Athlete.

2003: Appeared in all 61 of the Cougars' games, starting 60 … Displayed notable improvement over her freshman campaign, particularly in the power department … Was fifth on the team in batting (.300), second in home runs (4) and third in doubles (19) and RBIs (29) … Hit safely in 18 of the final 22 games … In a doubleheader sweep of Cal State San Bernardino was 4-for-5 with 5 RBIs and 3 doubles while firing a 2-hit shutout in the first game … Her lone triple of the season came in the seventh inning with 2 outs and lifted Azusa Pacific to a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over UC San Diego … In a split with The Master's was 3-for-5 with 4 RBIs, 2 doubles and a home run … As a pitcher had a 3-hit shutout victory over Notre Dame de Namur which included a season-high 6 strikeouts.

2002: Proved to be one of the top freshmen in the GSAC, appearing in 51 of the Cougars' 53 games as a pitcher and/or second baseman … As a pitcher was 8-7 with a 2.14 ERA with a team-leading 42 strikeouts in 98.1 innings of work … Was the Cougars' ace of the staff at the start of the season, getting assignments against such powers as Cal State Bakersfield, UC San Diego and San Diego … Best outing was a 3-hit shutout of San Diego … Also shutout GSAC rival The Master's in a 1-0 victory … Recorded a season-high 7 strikeouts in a 5-3 victory over San Francisco State for her first collegiate victory … Batted .231 with 7 doubles and a triple … Put together a personal-best 5-game hitting streak in which she went 8-for-15 with 5 runs scored.

HIGH SCHOOL: A 4-sport standout at James Logan High in Union City, Calif., where she captured All-Mission Valley Athletic League honors in both softball and volleyball … Earned 3 All-MVAL first team honors as a pitcher while leading the Colts to 3 straight league titles and a 36-0 league record in that time … As a 2000 junior and 2001 senior, named All-East Bay first team as a utility player … During her senior campaign, posted a 7-0 record with a 0.20 ERA, which included 1 perfect game, 2 no-hitters and a pair of 1-hitters … Batted .454 with 3 home runs, 5 triples and 7 doubles … Named ANG newspapers "Best of the Best" as a utility player … The Colts were a combined 83-15 during her 4 years … Also lettered 2 varsity seasons in basketball (shooting guard) and soccer (fullback) … An outstanding student, graduated magna cum laude and was a 4-time MVAL Scholar Athlete.

PERSONAL: Born Sept. 23, 1983, in Fremont, Calif., to Tim and Alice Alkire … Has 2 sisters, a twin, Rachel and Melanie, who was a 4-year standout at the University of Notre Dame (1997-2000), where she was the Big East Player of the Year … Majoring in liberal studies
